  1. New Year Songs

Below are the texts of three popular children New Year songs: "Yolochka" and "V lesu rodilas' yolochka" are given in Cyrillic and transliteration, "Jingle Bells" is available in English original, in Russian translation and transliterated.

    Под елочкой скакал.
    Порою волк, сердитый волк
    Рысцою пробегал.
    Чу! Снег по лесу частому
    Под полозом скрипит;
    Лошадка мохноногая
    Торопиться, бежит.
    Везет лошадка дровенки,
    А в дровнях старичок, [мужичок]
    Срубил он нашу ёлочку
    Под самый корешок.
    Теперь она, нарядная,
    На праздник к нам пришла
    И много, много радости
    Детишкам принесла

    Бубенчики (Jingle Bells)
    /народная песня/
    Блещет яркий снег,
    Словно ветер, сани мчат,
    Звенит веселый смех
    С бубенчиками в лад.

    На санках расписных
    Прокатиться каждый рад,
    И льется наша песня
    С бубенчиками в лад.

    Динь-динь-дон,
    Динь-динь-дон,
    Льется чудный звон,
    Слышен смех со всех сторон,
    Сани мчатся под уклон.
    перевод Ю. Хазанова

    (folk song)
    Dashing through the snow,
    In a one-horse open sleigh,
And o'ver the fields we go,
    Laughing all the way.

    The bells on bob-tail ring,
    Making spirits brights,
What fun it is to ride and sing
    A sleighing song tonight.

    Jingle bells,
    jingle bells,
    Jingle all the way,
Oh, what fun it is to ride
    In a one-horse open sleigh

  3. V Lesu Rodilas Yolochka ("The forest raised a Christmas tree")

It is really the most popular Russian New Year song, just a legend. There is no person in the country, who doesn't know that song or several lines from it. It is the first song children learn by heart at school or even earlier. It was written in 1903-1905 by poet Raisa Kudasheva and composer Leo Beckmann.

  4. The forest raised a Christmas tree,
    ‘Twas silent and serene
    In winter and in summer
It was slender and so green.

The wind sang it a lullaby:
    Sleep Christmas tree, sleep tight!
The snow was making clothes for it:
    It was a pretty sight!

    A trembling bunny put himself
    Beneath its arms so wide;
The hungry wolf just passed him by -
    A lovely place to hide!

Some sleigh bells rang throughout the woods,
The snow was crisp and clean,
    A horsey brought a forester
To hew that tree so green.

And now it comes to visit us,
    With lights and garlands bright,
While all the children dance and sing
    To greet it with delight!

  14. “Moroz Moroz.” The simple yet charming lyrics of this Russian folk song are all about the winter season and the cold of the country. A man sings of his trusty horse and the loving wife he’s looking forward to go home to and meet again.

  15. “Step’ Da Step’ Krugom.” This Russian Christmas song is both sad and touching. The lyrics are the farewell of a man who is hopelessly lost and slowly dying in the winter forest.
